A Different World is returning with a new generation at Hillman College, because apparently somebody finally remembered that television can revive a beloved show without turning it into a grim police procedural.
The new series arrives on Netflix during the week of September 21. It revisits the fictional historically Black college that became one of the defining television settings of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The original gave college life room to be complicated
A Different World began as a spinoff but developed its own identity, combining comedy with stories about race, class, relationships, politics and young adulthood. For many viewers, Hillman provided the first sustained network-TV portrait of life at an HBCU.
The show also gave Gen X Whitley Gilbert, Dwayne Wayne’s flip-up glasses and an opening theme that could still assemble an entire room before the first verse finished.
A revival inherits more than nostalgia
The new version has the opportunity to explore college life shaped by social media, student debt, political polarization and changing expectations around identity. The challenge is honoring what Hillman represented without simply photocopying the old characters and adding Wi-Fi.
The Associated Press included the revival in its September 19, 2026, streaming preview.
Reboots succeed when they understand why the original mattered, not merely that people remember it. Hillman was never just a backdrop. It was a promise that Black students could occupy the center of a smart, funny and emotionally rich television world. That remains worth bringing back.
Facts first. Side-eye included.
