A bear walked up the gangplank of a docked tuna boat in northern Japan, strolled to the bow and fell asleep for more than four hours while three crew members remained locked safely inside. The animal did not have a reservation, a fishing license or the courtesy to tip.

The encounter occurred in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture. Police said the bear, about one meter tall, boarded around 8:30 p.m. Saturday using the boat's access plank.

The crew made the sensible choice

Rather than attempt to evict a wild animal from close quarters, the three people aboard secured themselves in a locked room. The bear explored the vessel, settled on the deck and went to sleep.

After 1 a.m., the animal fell from the boat into the water and disappeared. Crew members emerged unharmed. The bear was not seen again immediately after entering the water.

Bear encounters are increasing in populated areas

Japan has experienced growing concern about bears entering towns and neighborhoods as habitat conditions, food availability and population changes push animals closer to people. Authorities repeatedly advise residents not to approach or attempt to feed them.

A separate incident in Miyagi that weekend involved a train striking a bear in Iwanuma. Rail workers needed nearly two hours to remove the animal, which died.

UOL reported the boat encounter on September 21, 2026.

The tuna-boat crew survived because nobody mistook bravery for good judgment. They closed the door and let the unexpected passenger sleep through its maritime phase. Sometimes the correct wildlife-management strategy is simply admitting that the bear has the deck until checkout.
