The Ben Folds Five reunion tour is officially a calendar problem worth having. On October 21, the piano-rock trio announced nine American South shows for April 2027, with tickets scheduled for October 23 at 10 a.m. local time. The band can get back together. The rest of us now need to get our calendars, budgets and lower backs into the same meeting.
Stereogum reports that Ben Folds, bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee last toured together in 2013, although they reunited for a hometown performance in 2023. The announced run begins April 12 in Knoxville and ends April 24 in Birmingham, with stops including Chattanooga, Jacksonville, Austin and Houston. It is described as the first leg of a wider outing.
That description leaves room for more dates, but it does not supply them. Fans outside the announced route should follow the official band site rather than treating an optimistic comment thread as a booking agency. The current announcement is enough to establish a return to touring; it is not a complete national itinerary or a promise that every city will appear.
For a Gen X audience, the appeal of a reunion can be more specific than a general desire to be young again. A band is a particular musical conversation among particular people. Hearing those musicians together offers something different from replaying a recording alone, even when the songs are familiar enough to survive years in a car stereo.
Our take: nostalgia works best when it leads to actual listening. The temptation is to turn every reunion into a referendum on whether the old days were better. That is exhausting, and the old days already had plenty of problems without being hired as full-time cultural management. A show can simply be a chance to hear how a familiar collaboration sounds now.
Check the official itinerary and individual venue information for sale details and any changes. No set list or performance quality can be guaranteed by an announcement, and this is not a review of concerts that have not happened. What is confirmed is a reunion tour with a first group of dates. The piano has a schedule; your group chat now has a purpose.
