NEW — Aug. 22, 2026: Kacey Musgraves opened her Middle of Nowhere tour in Chicago with the sort of stage prop that makes a modest fog machine look deeply ashamed of itself.

During Friday night's show at the United Center, Musgraves performed “Rhinestoned” while seated on a glitter-covered suspended chair attached to two enormous spherical ornaments. Fans quickly decided the arrangement looked less like ordinary disco balls and more like anatomy wearing a Vegas residency.

Musgraves knew exactly what everyone was seeing

Video from the show spread online Saturday morning, and Musgraves did not pretend the visual resemblance was an accident. From the stage, she joked that this is what happens when nobody tells her no.

There is no confirmed technical name for the apparatus beyond “floating chair,” “disco balls” and whatever the insurance paperwork calls it. What is confirmed is that Musgraves was harnessed to the prop while singing and that the moment came during the tour's Chicago opening.

The tour is officially airborne

The United Center listed the Aug. 21 concert as the opening of the Middle of Nowhere tour, with Midland as special guest. Musgraves' official schedule sends the production to Toronto next, followed by dates across North America through October.

Pop tours have given us flying platforms, giant snakes, motorcycles and enough hydraulic lifts to stock an airport hangar. Musgraves apparently looked at that history and asked the question every great artist eventually asks: yes, but what if it had balls?
