Kenan Thompson is trading Studio 8H for the America’s Got Talent judges’ desk—at least for one night.
The longtime Saturday Night Live star will fill in for Simon Cowell during the September 1 live quarterfinal episode, joining Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara and Mel B. People reported the replacement as Cowell prepares to take a brief break from the NBC competition.
Cowell is expected to undergo a routine back procedure connected to lingering problems from the electric-bike accident that broke his back in 2020. The absence is described as temporary, and the 66-year-old judge is expected to return within weeks.
Thompson is not walking into completely unfamiliar territory. He also occupied Cowell’s seat during the 2020 season while Cowell recovered from the original injury, so he already knows how quickly a giant red buzzer can change the mood in a room.
The September 1 show is the third live quarterfinal round of Season 21. Thompson’s guest appearance gives NBC a recognizable, comedy-heavy substitute without changing the season’s permanent panel.
For Cowell, the pause comes after years of managing the effects of the accident while continuing his television schedule. For Thompson, it is another very public side quest in a career that has made him one of television’s most durable performers.
