JUST IN — Aug. 23, 2026: Kyle Kirkwood won the inaugural Freedom 250 on Sunday, leading 128 of 147 laps while IndyCar temporarily converted downtown Washington into the loudest civics lesson in America.
Kirkwood crossed the finish line in front of the U.S. Capitol 3.09 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard. Will Power finished third and Marcus Ericsson fourth, giving Andretti Global three of the top four positions.
The victory was Kirkwood's second of the 2026 season. It also tightened a championship race that had looked considerably more comfortable for Alex Palou when the weekend began.
The race started with a presidential green flag
President Donald Trump waved the green flag, while Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser served as grand marshal. The 250-mile street race was staged as part of the United States' 250th birthday celebrations, with a course running through the capital and past some scenery normally associated with motorcades moving at a much more bureaucratic pace.
The field went under caution almost immediately because of debris in Turn 4. David Malukas later hit the wall, and Sting Ray Robb crashed while trying to avoid him. Both drivers were knocked out of the race.
Palou's afternoon unraveled in the pits
Palou started from pole with a chance to clinch the IndyCar championship, but his race became a collection of things no driver puts on the vision board.
He received a drive-through penalty after appearing to strike a tire in another team's pit area. A loose tire during a later stop cost him more time, and he eventually spun on the street circuit. Palou finished 20th, his second-worst result of the season.
That reduced Palou's championship lead over Kirkwood from 133 points to 91 with three races remaining. Ninety-one points is still a cushion; it is simply no longer the kind that lets anyone begin engraving the trophy during dinner.
Kirkwood controlled the late restarts
Kirkwood had built a commanding advantage before Palou's spin produced another caution. On a restart with 19 laps left, Scott McLaughlin challenged for the lead but ended up in a tire barrier.
When racing resumed with 13 laps remaining, Kirkwood made a clean restart and Lundgaard never got close enough to mount a serious final attack. Kirkwood completed a dominant afternoon on a course that had never hosted an IndyCar race before this weekend.
Washington has now seen a lot of unusual traffic plans, but a 147-lap contest past the Capitol belongs in its own binder.
