British political provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is being held pending deportation, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
DHS says Yiannopoulos, 41, legally entered the United States in May 2019 but remained after his authorized stay expired. Federal officials say he was arrested at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.
An immigration judge issued a final removal order July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for a hearing, Reuters reports. His current legal representation and any planned challenge to the order were not immediately clear.
The detention has drawn attention because Yiannopoulos previously advocated aggressive immigration enforcement, including checkpoints and immediate deportations for people unable to prove legal residency.
Yiannopoulos rose to prominence through Breitbart News, the Gamergate controversy and later political work connected to Ye and former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
He remains in ICE custody. Immigration detention is a civil process, and the reported visa violation is an allegation within that process rather than a criminal conviction.
