CNN, MS NOW and Politico have sued the Trump administration after the White House deactivated their reporters’ credentials, apparently deciding the First Amendment comes with a velvet rope and the bouncer checks whether the president enjoyed your last headline.

The outlets say they were excluded because of their coverage and received no meaningful notice or due process. Their lawsuit alleges violations of the First and Fifth Amendments and asks a federal court to restore access while the case proceeds.

Access can be managed, but not as political revenge

No newsroom owns a permanent seat in every room. The government may impose neutral security and logistical rules. What it generally cannot do is punish journalists because officials dislike their viewpoint. That distinction is the difference between managing a press pool and building a taxpayer-funded fan club.

The dispute echoes earlier cases involving reporters Jim Acosta and Brian Karem, whose credentials were restored after courts questioned White House procedures. This time, the ban targets entire news organizations and has disrupted shared television pool coverage.

The public loses when scrutiny becomes optional

Press freedom does not exist as a perk for CNN, Politico or any individual reporter. It protects the public’s ability to learn what government is doing from sources the government does not control. A president calling journalism “fake” does not create a constitutional delete button.

The Associated Press reported on the lawsuit, the revoked credentials and the industry response in September 2026.

Trump may prefer flattering coverage. Most politicians do. The Constitution was designed for the exact moment when preference tries to become state power—and when somebody in a robe has to explain that the press room is not Mar-a-Lago karaoke night.
