DEVELOPING — Aug. 23, 2026: Two crew members have been rescued and a search is underway for 22 others after the Panama-flagged bulk carrier Ocean Winner sank in the Bay of Bengal off eastern India.
The Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy deployed three ships for surface searches after authorities received a distress alert and lost contact with the vessel, the Associated Press reported Sunday. A nearby commercial vessel, MT Aisopos, was also asked to assist.
Twenty-four people were aboard
The ship carried 24 crew members: 20 Chinese nationals, three people from Myanmar and one Bangladeshi, according to the Coast Guard. The two people rescued from life rafts late Saturday were receiving medical treatment while officials worked to confirm their identities and ranks.
Reuters reported that the vessel was carrying iron ore after departing Paradip port. AP, citing India's shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal, said the cargo was headed to China. Reuters reported Singapore as the destination, so the final port has not been stated consistently in the first official and news accounts.
The ship went down roughly 240 nautical miles from Paradip, according to Reuters. AP cited a Press Trust of India report placing it about 276 miles, or 444 kilometers, from the Odisha coast. Those figures describe approximately the same offshore area using different units and sourcing.
The cause has not been determined
The reason for the sinking was not immediately known. Early reports do not establish a mechanical failure, weather event or other cause, and no responsible account can fill that blank until investigators do.
This is an active rescue operation, not a moment for punch lines or premature conclusions. The confirmed facts are that two people are alive and under medical care, 22 remain the subject of a joint search, and maritime crews are working far offshore to find them.
