Pope Leo XIV returned to the Italian sanctuary where he prayed two days after his election and unveiled a fresco showing that very moment. Most people commemorate an important prayer with a journal entry. Popes have access to cornices.
A personal place becomes church history
The Sanctuary of Our Mother of Good Counsel in Genazzano has deep ties to Leo's Augustinian order. The former Robert Prevost visited it many times before becoming pope, then returned on May 10, 2025, seeking prayer and grounding as his new responsibility began.
The portrait joins images of other popes whose pilgrimages have been recorded on the basilica walls since the 17th century. Leo celebrated Mass with Augustinian brothers and spoke about the comfort and spiritual direction he associates with the site.
Devotion, memory and a little institutional permanence
Associated Press reported the September 7 ceremony. A fresco can look grand, but its subject is private dependence rather than public triumph: a newly elected leader kneeling because the job is larger than he is.
That is not a bad image for any powerful person. Gen X may distrust institutional pageantry, yet “remember the moment you asked for help” is solid leadership advice—even when the reminder is painted several stories above the floor.
