Days of Thunder 2 has not reached theaters, but Randy Quaid has already driven the conversation directly into the wall. The actor, who played team owner Tim Daland in the 1990 original, attacked the casting of Anne Hathaway in a series of social posts after her sequel role was announced.
Quaid called Hathaway a poor choice, dragged politics into the argument and said Tom Cruise should reunite onscreen with Nicole Kidman instead. He also commented on Hathaway’s pregnancy and appearance, proving once again that a person can remember a 36-year-old movie while forgetting every modern rule of basic manners.
Here is what is actually confirmed
Cruise is returning as Cole Trickle, Hathaway has joined the sequel, and Paramount has dated the film for June 2028. Hathaway is reportedly playing a racing-team owner and engineer rather than replacing Kidman’s original character. Quaid has publicly suggested he may return, but his participation has not been clearly confirmed by the studio.
His complaint is especially odd because sequels are allowed to introduce new women without convening an emergency meeting of the original cast. Kidman’s Dr. Claire Lewicki remains part of the first film’s history; Hathaway’s role can exist without deleting it.
THE JUNK FOOD TAKERandy Quaid had several options: congratulate the cast, wait for a script or simply go outside. He chose the fourth option—turning someone else’s casting announcement into a full-service grievance buffet.
Neither Cruise nor Hathaway has publicly responded to the remarks. That is probably wise. The cars are supposed to create the noise in a racing movie.
