SUNDAY BOX OFFICE — Aug. 23, 2026: Spider-Man: Brand New Day kept the top spot in North American theaters for a fourth weekend, while The Odyssey crossed a different finish line and became Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing movie worldwide.

Sony's Spider-Man added an estimated $39 million from 4,006 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates reported Sunday by the Associated Press. Its domestic total now stands above $854.9 million.

Spider-Man is approaching another giant record

The new total puts Brand New Day on course to pass Avengers: Endgame and become the second-highest-grossing domestic release of all time. Star Wars: The Force Awakens remains first with $936.7 million.

That is an extremely exclusive chart, the cinematic equivalent of a high-school cafeteria table where every student has their own action figure.

The weekend's biggest new release, Insidious: Out of the Further, opened in second place with an estimated $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters. The sixth Insidious movie also collected $35 million internationally, according to the AP.

The Odyssey is now Nolan's biggest film

The Odyssey finished third domestically with $19.5 million in its sixth weekend. That lifted its North American total to just under $539.1 million, passing the $534.9 million earned by The Dark Knight without adjusting for inflation.

International sales added another $68 million, led by China and Korea, bringing The Odyssey to $1.4 billion worldwide. It is now Nolan's highest-grossing film both domestically and globally. Earlier in the week, it also passed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide.

Other newcomers had a rougher landing

Jason Statham's Mutiny opened in sixth with $7.5 million. The AP reported that the movie had accidentally appeared free on Prime Video for several hours shortly before opening, a distribution strategy generally filed under “please never let this happen again.”

Spa Weekend, starring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau, opened ninth with an estimated $3.1 million. The 25th-anniversary rerelease of The Fast and the Furious earned slightly more, while Andrew Garfield's The Magic Faraway Tree opened outside the top 10 with $1.4 million.

North American summer ticket sales have reached an estimated $4.4 billion, placing the season among the four biggest ever. Year-to-date sales have passed $7 billion—up 20.4 percent from 2025, though still 7.1 percent below 2019.

These are Sunday studio estimates. Final domestic figures are expected Monday, which means the order is stable enough for headlines but not yet carved into the multiplex concrete.
