President Donald Trump says he is lifting the 10% tariff on Irish whiskey because, in his telling, “everybody” kept bugging him. International trade policy: now apparently settled with the same method used to choose a pizza topping.

A small tariff with a noticeable hangover

The duty had already fallen from 15% to 10%, but Irish producers argued that it put them at a disadvantage after tariffs on British spirits, including Scotch whisky, were removed. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin raised the issue, and Irish Open champion Shane Lowry added his voice during Trump’s visit to Doonbeg.

U.S. restaurants, bars, importers and distributors also supported relief because tariffs can raise costs throughout the supply chain. The Distilled Spirits Council welcomed the announcement ahead of the holiday season.

The announcement still needs details

Associated Press reported on September 14 that Trump did not specify when the tariff would end. Businesses will need a formal effective date, not only applause at a golf event.

Gen X understands persistence. We called radio stations repeatedly to request one song and wore down our parents about cable television. Still, a stable trade system should run on published rules and predictable timelines—not on who managed to get mentioned near the 18th green.
