President Donald Trump plans to personally greet Chinese President Xi Jinping when he arrives for a state visit next week, giving one of the world’s most consequential rivalries the full ceremony package: military honors, private talks, a formal dinner and enough powerful guests to make the seating chart qualify as foreign policy.
The visit will be the first U.S. state visit by a Chinese leader in more than a decade. Trump is expected to meet Xi at Joint Base Andrews before a White House welcome and discussions covering tariffs, rare-earth minerals, artificial intelligence and the broader contest between the world’s two largest economies.
The guest list is part of the message
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla chief Elon Musk and Google CEO Sundar Pichai are among the business leaders invited to the dinner, according to reporting on the preparations. Their presence underlines how quickly any conversation about Washington and Beijing becomes a conversation about chips, supply chains, data and who gets to build the next technological era.
The ceremony also offers both leaders a useful image: two strongmen talking directly while markets, allies and rivals watch for clues. State visits are diplomacy wrapped in pageantry, like an awards show where the acceptance speech can move the price of oil.
Polite choreography cannot erase the disputes
The United States and China remain divided over trade restrictions, Taiwan, security in the Indo-Pacific and control of critical materials. A warm arrival does not mean those conflicts have disappeared; it means both governments see value in managing them without letting every disagreement become an international fire alarm.
The Associated Press reported the state-visit preparations on September 19, 2026.
Diplomacy is supposed to look calmer than the problems it addresses. The useful test will come after the flags are folded, the dessert plates are cleared and somebody has to explain what changed besides the photographs.
Facts first. Side-eye included.
