World leaders gathered at the United Nations General Assembly facing wars, humanitarian crises, climate disasters and widening distrust between major powers. In other words, the planet arrived for its annual performance review carrying a binder labeled “still unresolved.”

Speeches addressed conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, economic pressure, artificial intelligence and the growing difficulty of persuading countries to cooperate when national politics rewards confrontation.

The institution is only as strong as its members allow

The United Nations can coordinate aid, inspections, peacekeeping and diplomacy, but it cannot manufacture agreement among governments determined to block one another. Security Council vetoes remain a recurring obstacle, especially when permanent members or their allies are directly involved in a conflict.

Critics reasonably point to resolutions that go unenforced and speeches that substitute for policy. Supporters note that even adversaries need a room where representatives can communicate before misunderstandings become missiles.

Multilateralism is frustrating because the alternative is worse

No global body can erase national interests. The practical value of the UN is its ability to establish shared rules, document violations and organize collective responses that individual countries cannot manage alone.

The Associated Press surveyed the crises and competing agendas shaping the September 2026 General Assembly.

The gathering will be judged by what follows the microphones: access for aid, enforceable agreements, safer civilians and fewer governments treating international law like the terms-of-service box everybody clicks without reading.
