A Wisconsin congressman had to swim to safety after the small plane carrying him made an emergency landing in a lake. Most political travel disasters end with a delayed connection and a sad airport sandwich. This one required flotation.
An unscheduled water arrival
The aircraft came down in the water after experiencing trouble, according to initial reporting. The congressman and others aboard escaped, reached safety and were evaluated. Authorities began the standard process of examining the aircraft and circumstances surrounding the landing.
An emergency landing on water is not a casual maneuver. Even when everyone survives, passengers face impact, disorientation, cold water and the urgent need to exit before an aircraft sinks or shifts. The calm actions of the pilot and passengers matter enormously.
A rare headline with a good ending
Associated Press reported the incident on September 13. More specific findings should come from aviation investigators, and early accounts should not be mistaken for a final cause.
For now, the important result is that the occupants got out alive. There will be time for hearings, inspections and at least one campaign joke about crossing the aisle by freestyle. Gen X grew up being told to locate the exits before takeoff; nobody mentioned the exit might open directly into a lake. Sometimes strange news is just frightening news that remembered to end well.
