Astronomers have confirmed Elias 2-24 b, a planet less than one million years old and currently the youngest exoplanet scientists have directly observed. In planetary terms, it has not even learned to blame its parents yet.

The world sits roughly 450 light-years away and is estimated to be two to four times the mass of Jupiter. It orbits far from its young star inside a protoplanetary disk—the vast ring of gas and dust from which planets form.

A gap in the disk gave the planet away

Scientists first suspected a planet in 2017 after seeing a gap carved through the surrounding material. New observations from multiple telescopes provided direct evidence of the world itself.

Young planets are difficult to identify because the dusty disks that produce them can also hide them. Confirming one this early allows researchers to test how rapidly giant planets accumulate material and change their orbits.

This alien world is almost certainly not an alien home

Elias 2-24 b is a massive, extremely young gas giant living inside a chaotic construction zone. The discovery is about how planets are born, not a claim that intelligent residents are currently filing zoning complaints.

Live Science reported the confirmed discovery in September 2026.

Every mature solar system began in some version of this disorder. By catching a planet almost at the beginning, astronomers gain a frame from the cosmic home movie that our own neighborhood lost 4.5 billion years ago.
