NEW — Aug. 22, 2026: Andrew Garfield does not maintain a public Instagram account, but he has now confirmed that a private one is quietly feeding him weird ceramics, Japanese crafts and the same weekly screen-time shame spiral delivered to the rest of civilization.

In a new interview with Variety, Garfield said he is as susceptible to Instagram as anyone else and described his screen-time notifications as horrifying. His issue was not simply the number of hours, but the realization that they had disappeared into scrolling.

Spider-Man has an algorithm, too

Garfield said the account's feed includes unusual pottery and work from Japanese craftspeople. That is more tasteful than doomscrolling through an argument between two strangers with anime avatars, but apparently no less effective at making an afternoon vanish.

He also pushed back on the notion that compulsive phone use is only a personal failure, arguing that platforms are intentionally designed to capture attention. His low-tech countermeasure is familiar: leave the phone in another room and create enough distance to break the reflex.

The confession fits his current projects

The conversation arrived while Garfield was discussing The Magic Faraway Tree, a family film that includes concerns about children's relationship with technology. He said the story does not treat technology as inherently evil, but does ask what a healthier relationship with it might look like.

Garfield is also involved in Artificial, Luca Guadagnino's forthcoming film about the upheaval surrounding OpenAI. Taken together, his current work has him circling the same modern question from several directions: how much of our lives do we want to hand to a screen?

The answer, judging by nearly every weekly phone report ever issued, is “less than this.”
