YouTuber Chris Sails was arrested after police said he made a false statement that sent emergency crews searching a body of water for children who were safe with relatives.

The case began Aug. 16, when the Waller County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a suspicious person allegedly running and jumping onto vehicles in a Texas neighborhood. Officers found Sails in the roadway near a light pole, according to reporting based on court records.

During questioning, authorities allege Sails told officers that his children had fallen into water behind his home. Emergency workers treated the claim as real. Fire vehicles, rescue boats, sonar equipment and aerial drones were deployed before officials learned the children were safe with family members.

Sails was arrested Aug. 17 on a misdemeanor allegation of knowingly making a false report to law enforcement and was released after posting bond the following day. The charge is an allegation, and he has not been convicted.

The children are not being named. The unsettling part of the case is the scale of the response: rescuers mobilized around a nightmare scenario, only to be told that the emergency they were searching for had not occurred.
