Cher has filed a new court brief opposing daughter-in-law Marieangela King-Allman's effort to be appointed guardian for Elijah Blue Allman, intensifying a painful family dispute over who should protect him and manage his affairs.
Elijah, 50, is currently in a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital and faces criminal charges. Cher's filing alleges that King-Allman is motivated by money or fame and argues that other relatives or an independent professional would be more appropriate.
Two sharply different positions
Cher's brief points to the couple's estrangement and prior divorce proceedings, and alleges King-Allman was not sufficiently involved during earlier crises. Cher supports Elijah's half-brothers, Chaz Bono and Devon Allman, as possible guardians and has asked for a professional fiduciary to manage financial matters.
King-Allman disputes that picture. Her petition argues that Cher's wishes should not override Elijah's autonomy and challenges outside control of his affairs. The court has not decided that Cher's allegations are true.
A long and complicated legal history
Cher first sought a temporary conservatorship in late 2023, saying her son could not safely manage his finances. She withdrew that effort in 2024 as the family attempted reconciliation. A later request was denied in April 2026.
The current dispute is about guardianship and financial protection while Elijah remains hospitalized. A further hearing is scheduled for December 1.
Fame does not simplify a family emergency
Elijah is the son of Cher and the late Gregg Allman, which makes the case clickable. It does not make it entertainment in the lightweight sense. It involves mental health, legal rights, money, marriage and relatives who disagree about what protection should look like.
DJF will follow the court record and attribute every claim to the person making it. For now, there is a filing, an objection and no final ruling. Even Cher cannot “turn back time” and make a family crisis uncomplicated. The court must sort evidence from accusation.
