Germany has pledged full support for the International Criminal Court as the Trump administration increases pressure on the institution and sanctions its personnel. International justice is now trying to conduct war-crimes cases while checking whether the payroll vendor is afraid of Washington.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited the court in The Hague and said Germany would work with partners to defend its independence. Germany is the ICC’s second-largest financial contributor after Japan.
The sanctions reach beyond political criticism
The United States has targeted judges, prosecutors and other ICC staff over investigations involving U.S. personnel and the court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Broader restrictions could interfere with banking, technology services, travel and ordinary court administration.
The U.S., Israel and Russia are not ICC members and have sharply challenged its jurisdiction. Supporters argue that the court remains an essential last resort when national systems cannot or will not prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Europe is considering practical defenses
European governments have discussed using legal tools such as the EU blocking statute to shield the court and companies serving it from American penalties. The Netherlands, which hosts the ICC, has also defended its ability to function.
Germany frames its support through its own history and its commitment to international accountability. That does not place every ICC decision beyond criticism. It does mean disputes over jurisdiction should be fought with law and evidence rather than an effort to make the courthouse technologically and financially unusable.
Reuters reported Germany’s pledge and the expanding U.S. pressure campaign.
A court cannot deliver justice if staff cannot receive salaries or open software. Trump’s strategy appears to be less “win the legal argument” and more “unplug the building.” Germany has now said it intends to help keep the lights on.
