A federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration from canceling nearly $56 million in housing-counseling grants while a lawsuit proceeds. The money supports homebuyer education, foreclosure prevention and rental assistance—the glamorous ideological machinery of helping people avoid losing the roof.

Ten nonprofits sued after the Department of Housing and Urban Development moved to rescind grants previously approved by Congress. They argue HUD abruptly changed a longstanding program and targeted organizations associated with diversity, equity and inclusion work.

The deadline made the harm immediate

The judge extended a September 30 funding deadline so the money would not disappear before the legal claims could be heard. The nonprofits said losing the grants would force service cuts during a national housing-affordability crisis.

The administration describes the cancellations as part of a broader effort to eliminate ideologically driven spending. The challengers say the government cannot punish organizations for protected viewpoints or rewrite grant conditions after awards have been made.

This is a pause, not a final ruling

The injunction preserves the funds while both sides submit further arguments, with responses due by October 19. The court has not yet decided the ultimate legality of the cancellations.

Reuters reported the injunction, grant amounts and constitutional claims on October 1, 2026.

For now, organizations can keep counseling people facing foreclosure and unstable rent. Somewhere, a spreadsheet labeled “anti-woke savings” has been asked to sit quietly until the Constitution finishes reading the terms.
