Gerrit Graham, the actor whose five-decade career included cult movies, network comedies, Star Trek aliens and one magnificently unhinged glam-rock singer, has died. He passed away September 15 in Rhinebeck, New York, after living with lung disease.

For cult-film devotees, Graham will forever be Beef in Brian De Palma’s 1974 Phantom of the Paradise: swaggering, theatrical and doomed, with the energy of a frontman who found the volume knob and snapped it off. The film underperformed on release before becoming the kind of midnight-movie obsession that turns failure into immortality.

He made strange characters feel fully committed

Graham also appeared in De Palma’s Greetings and Hi, Mom!, played memorable roles in Used Cars and Child’s Play 2, and moved easily through television, including Miami Vice, Seinfeld, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

His work was not limited to acting. Graham wrote for television, contributed dialogue to Disney animation and co-wrote “Victim or the Crime,” recorded by Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead. That is a résumé assembled by someone who apparently regarded staying in one lane as a personal insult.

Cult careers outlast opening-weekend arithmetic

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Graham’s death and career on September 19, 2026.

Graham rarely played the safe center of a story. He made the edges more interesting, which is where Gen X learned to look after the mainstream ran out of ideas. Beef may have gone down onstage, but Graham’s glorious collection of oddballs will keep stealing scenes.
