The Hot Chip new album announcement arrived October 19 with a release date, a first single and an actual emotional center. A Long Way From Kansas is due January 8, 2027. The new track, Random Violence, honors Keith McIvor, better known as JD Twitch of Optimo. In an industry fond of announcing that an announcement is coming, this is refreshingly close to delivering the groceries.
Domino describes the record as the band’s ninth album. The announcement connects the single to McIvor’s musical influence and Joe Goddard’s memories of their friendship in Glasgow. Its video, directed by Jack Cole, features Boss Morris. The band also announced a DJ gathering with friends at Glasgow’s Sub Club on October 21 to celebrate McIvor’s legacy.
The eleven-track album includes guest appearances by Beth Ditto and Eddie Chacon. Those are announced details, not a claim that we have heard an advance copy. The single is available now; the full record is still ahead. Keeping those two things separate should not require an intervention, but the internet has made a demanding hobby of reviewing objects before they arrive.
Our take: dance music can carry remembrance without becoming a solemn museum exhibit. The interesting tension in this announcement is between movement and loss, a communal night out and the person who is missing from it. A tribute does not have to stop the room. Sometimes the room continuing together is precisely the point.
For older listeners, that idea lands differently than it did when the big concern was whether there was enough cash for the last train. Music scenes become a collection of people, rooms and formative nights. Eventually, an album announcement can bring all three back at once. Nostalgia gets more useful when it remembers who made those places feel alive instead of merely congratulating us for having been young.
No tour itinerary is being invented here, and no January release is being described as already out. The immediate news is today’s album announcement and single, with Wednesday’s Glasgow gathering next. Give the song a listen and keep the release date attached. We have survived enough format changes to know that a preorder and a record are not yet the same thing.
