BREAKING — Updated Aug. 22, 2026: Hull City has returned to the Premier League, opening its season at the MKM Stadium against Manchester United while United debuts a brand-new central midfield.
The team sheets released shortly before kickoff confirmed competitive Manchester United debuts for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. They start together in midfield under manager Michael Carrick.
United’s midfield renovation is officially open
Manchester United starts Senne Lammens in goal, with Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw across the back. Tielemans and Santos form the midfield base, with Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Patrick Dorgu behind Matheus Cunha.
Marcus Rashford is back on the United bench after 20 months away from the club’s first-team picture. Benjamin Sesko is also among the substitutes following a shin injury. Amad misses out after picking up what Carrick described as a late-week niggle.
Hull’s big day finally arrives
Hull begins its top-flight return with Konstantinos Tzolakis in goal and a probable three-man defense. Oli McBurnie leads the line as the club attempts to turn the excitement of promotion into the slightly less relaxing experience of trying to stop Manchester United.
The lineup was reported within the last hour by The Guardian’s live match coverage.
Opening-day predictions rarely survive contact with an actual football. United arrives as the favorite, Hull arrives with a loud home crowd and both teams arrive carrying enough fresh personnel to make the first 20 minutes resemble a group project where everyone just learned one another’s names.
