A North Carolina jury has convicted Jeanie Kassandra Ditty of first-degree murder in the 2015 death of her 2-year-old daughter, Macy Grace Ditty, bringing a decade-long prosecution to a new conclusion.

A Cumberland County judge sentenced Ditty to life in prison without parole. She also received a consecutive sentence of 157 to 201 months for felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, according to the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys and WRAL.

A case that took more than one trial

Paramedics brought Macy to Cape Fear Valley Regional Medical Center on Dec. 2, 2015, with catastrophic injuries. She died two days later. Fayetteville police determined that blunt-force trauma caused her death, and Ditty was charged in 2016.

A prior trial ended without a unanimous verdict. The later proceedings and appeals stretched the case across years before the new jury returned guilty verdicts in August 2026.

The photograph that resurfaced after the verdict

National coverage this week has also returned attention to an unsettling episode before Ditty’s arrest. She asked a photographer to create composite images portraying her with Macy in an imagined “afterlife” scene. The photographer later said she had believed she was helping a grieving mother and declined payment.

The manipulated photographs are not evidence of the homicide and should not overshadow the trial record. The conviction rests on medical evidence and witness testimony presented in court, not on an internet-era image whose strangeness now makes it easy to sensationalize.

For Macy’s family, the verdict closes one phase of a case that began when she was still two years old. Ditty has the right to pursue further appellate review.
