A Louisville man has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a woman with whom court records say he had previously been in an intimate relationship.
Donald Lee Smith, 55, was arrested Tuesday, August 25, and charged with murder involving domestic violence, according to WDRB's review of court records. The charge is an allegation, and Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The victim was identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Kimberly Alexander, 53. Unlike child victims, an adult homicide victim is ordinarily named so that the public record does not reduce her to an anonymous crime-scene description.
The stabbing happened August 6
Louisville Metro Police responded shortly after 7 p.m. on August 6 to an apartment in the 1000 block of South 38th Street in the city's Chickasaw neighborhood.
Officers found Alexander inside with stab wounds. She was transported to UofL Hospital with serious injuries and later died.
Police had not announced an arrest in the immediate aftermath. Alexander's family spoke publicly while investigators continued searching for the person responsible, asking anyone with information to come forward.
Smith's arrest nearly three weeks later is the major new development. Initial reporting did not describe what evidence led investigators to him, whether a weapon was recovered or what defense he may offer.
Court records describe a prior intimate relationship
WDRB reported that court documents say Smith and Alexander had previously been “intimately involved.” The public record available Tuesday did not provide a fuller account of the relationship or allege a motive.
The domestic-violence designation is significant because fatal attacks by a current or former partner often emerge from patterns that remain invisible outside a household. It is not, by itself, proof of every allegation in the criminal complaint.
Smith was scheduled for a Wednesday morning court appearance. The outcome of that appearance was not available at publication time.
A charge is the beginning of the court case
A murder arrest can create the impression that a case has been solved in every meaningful sense. Legally, it begins a process: prosecutors must disclose evidence, the defense can challenge it and a judge or jury must decide whether the state has met its burden.
Responsible coverage also keeps the victim in view. Alexander was a 53-year-old Louisville woman whose family publicly sought answers after she died. Her name should not disappear behind the defendant's booking information.
Police have not released a detailed narrative of the alleged attack. That absence is a reason for precision, not speculation. The confirmed facts are that Alexander was found stabbed inside an apartment on August 6, died after being hospitalized, and Smith was arrested August 25 on a murder charge designated as domestic violence.
Anyone with information about the case can contact Louisville Metro Police through its anonymous tip line. The court will now determine whether the evidence supports the charge.
