A teenage girl was critically injured in a shooting near a Jefferson County Public Schools bus stop in west Louisville, according to police.

Louisville Metro Police responded around 8 a.m. Tuesday to Beech Street near Wyandotte Avenue and found the student with a gunshot wound. She was taken to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not publicly identified the teenager.

The LMPD Homicide Unit took over the investigation because of the severity of her injuries. Police said no suspect had been identified and asked nearby residents and drivers to provide any information or video that could help investigators determine what happened.

JCPS officials said extra security would be present around the school and bus-stop area. Superintendent Robert Yearwood called violence involving children unacceptable and said the district would work with city officials on student safety.

The shooting occurred as students were beginning their day, turning an ordinary bus stop into an active crime scene. Anyone with information can contact the anonymous LMPD crime-tip line at 502-574-LMPD.
