Developing report, November 3, 2026. The shooting occurred early November 2. Authorities had not established a public account of motive or the relationships among those involved in the reporting reviewed here. Do not infer a suspect or a sequence of events from the casualty count.

Two people died and two others were injured in a shooting at Moss Landing State Beach early Monday, according to Monterey County sheriff's officials cited by Bay Area reporting. California State Parks temporarily closed the beach and Jetty Road, then announced the beach reopened around 3:30 p.m. November 2. Reopening the beach is an access update, not an announcement that the investigation is finished.

What officials have described

ABC7's Bay City News account says the sheriff's office received calls before 2 a.m. Two people were found dead at the scene. A third person arrived at a hospital; that person's condition was not clear in the account. A fourth had injuries described as not life-threatening.

KTVU's November 2 report attributes the two-death, two-injury count to sheriff's officials and describes a briefing by Commander Andy Rosas. He did not provide suspect information or a motive. The sources do not establish that an identified person has been charged, and this article does not supply one.

The closure notice has changed

The State Parks release identifies the Monterey County Sheriff's Office as the lead investigative agency, with State Parks peace officers and California Highway Patrol responding in support. The release also says there was no active threat to the community. Its update explicitly records the afternoon reopening.

That timeline matters when older headlines continue circulating. A headline saying the beach closed can accurately describe the initial response while failing to describe current access. The later reopening does not cancel the deaths, injuries or unanswered questions. Both facts belong in the same account.

What this report leaves unresolved

DJF has not independently interviewed witnesses or established what preceded the gunfire. The available reports do not justify inventing a confrontation, a perpetrator's motive or the victims' relationships. We are withholding those conclusions rather than turning the empty spaces in a developing investigation into a plot.
