Pueblo County sheriff’s deputies arrested two men and recovered 35 spent shell casings after an investigation into alleged gunfire from two moving vehicles in the St. Charles Mesa area.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests Monday. The reported shooting occurred during the early morning of August 14.

Two calls, two vehicles

Deputies responded around 2:35 a.m. to reports of numerous shots near Aspen Road and South Road and near South Road and 25th Lane. Investigators determined the calls were connected, according to the release.

Security footage helped deputies identify a red 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and a black BMW. A patrol deputy located the pickup at a nearby convenience store and detained three occupants for questioning, including a 15-year-old boy.

The BMW, which deputies said had no license plates, returned to the area but fled when officers attempted to stop it. Authorities had not located that vehicle when the release was issued.

A warrant added nine more casings

Deputies initially found 26 shell casings along the reported route. They said two firearms were visible inside the pickup, which was seized while investigators obtained a search warrant.

When the warrant was executed August 22, deputies recovered the two guns—including one with an extended magazine—and nine additional shell casings. That brought the documented total to 35.

Two arrests and an ongoing investigation

The pickup’s alleged driver, 22-year-old Isaiah Trujillo-Martinez, was arrested on allegations including illegal discharge of a firearm, possessing a dangerous weapon, child abuse, prohibited use of a firearm, possessing a large-capacity magazine and reckless endangerment.

Passenger Oscar DeHerrera, 25, was arrested on allegations including complicity, child abuse, illegal discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment. The sheriff’s office said the 15-year-old was not arrested because investigators determined he was not involved in the shooting.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and the investigation remains open. The recovered casings and firearms are evidence, not convictions—but 35 shell casings scattered through a residential area are also not harmless noise. Deputies are still seeking the second vehicle and the full account of who fired what.
