Sean Ono Lennon and his longtime partner Charlotte Kemp Muhl have welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Aurelius. Lennon announced the news September 1 by declaring that the couple had “created a Human Bean,” thereby entering fatherhood with the correct mixture of wonder and sleep-deprived comedy.
The couple, together since 2007, shared photographs of their new family. Musicians including Patti Smith and Willow Smith offered congratulations publicly.
A new Lennon generation
Aurelius is Sean's first child and a grandson of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Sean turned 50 last October—the same birthday John shared with him—and has spent much of his adult life managing the tension between carrying a historic name and building work of his own.
He has released solo music, collaborated with his mother and performed in projects including The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and The Claypool Lennon Delirium. He has also produced other artists, including work associated with Lana Del Rey.
The part Gen X cannot quite process
John Lennon famously stepped back from the music business after Sean's birth in 1975 and spent years focused on raising him. Gen X remembers Sean as the little boy embedded in the final chapter of the Beatles story. Now that little boy is 50 and holding his own son, while many of us are still recovering from learning that 1990 was not fifteen years ago.
The family's history is enormous, but a newborn does not arrive as a legacy project. He arrives hungry, unpredictable and unimpressed by discographies.
Welcome, Aurelius
The couple has not turned the announcement into a sprawling celebrity rollout, and we will respect the space around a brand-new family. What is public is joyful and enough.
Congratulations to Sean and Charlotte. Welcome to the world, Aurelius. Your family has written some music. No pressure whatsoever.
