Seven Vermont faith leaders were arrested after blocking entrances to a Williston facility connected to Immigration and Customs Enforcement targeting operations. Police charged the clergy members with unlawful trespass after they reportedly refused orders to leave.

Faith moved from the pulpit to the doorway

The Sept. 4 demonstration focused on ICE’s National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center, where information from public sources is used to assist immigration-enforcement operations. Protesters said their religious convictions compelled them to oppose the Trump administration’s mass-deportation campaign.

Those arrested ranged in age from 36 to 78 and represented multiple Vermont communities. The demonstration was part of continued protest activity around the Williston facility; earlier actions there also resulted in arrests.

The facts are straightforward: protesters intentionally blocked access, police issued directions and seven people were taken into custody. The larger argument is not straightforward at all. Supporters view the clergy members as practicing civil disobedience rooted in faith. Critics argue that religious belief does not exempt anyone from trespass laws or interference with federal operations.

An old American conflict in a new building

Religious leaders have been arrested during civil-rights, antiwar and labor protests for generations. The tactic forces a public question: when does obeying conscience justify deliberately violating a law?

The defendants will answer the legal charge in court. Voters and congregations will keep debating the moral one. No hashtag settles either issue, despite the internet’s heroic confidence that six words and an angry GIF constitute a constitutional seminar.
