President Donald Trump is expected to name former Securities and Exchange Commission chair Jay Clayton as an artificial-intelligence czar, according to a CNN report cited by Reuters. The White House would not confirm the appointment, saying personnel news would come from the president. Apparently even the job of supervising the machines now requires competing management layers.

Clayton currently serves as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and previously led the SEC during Trump's first term. A new AI portfolio would place him in the middle of fights over regulation, national security, copyright, jobs and the increasingly casual decision to place synthetic slop in every available human activity.

The administration already has an AI power center

Trump previously gave investor David Sacks an influential role overseeing AI and cryptocurrency policy. Reuters noted that Clayton would be the second adviser named to coordinate AI-related decisions, raising the obvious question of how the responsibilities would divide.

A title is not a policy. Until the White House announces an appointment and defines the authority, Clayton's precise role remains uncertain. The reported move nevertheless signals that AI governance is becoming a political command post rather than a niche technology assignment.

Everybody wants speed; nobody wants blame

Industry leaders want fewer barriers, national-security officials want American dominance, creators want their work protected and the public would enjoy not being impersonated by a chatbot before breakfast. Those demands do not naturally fit in one memo.

Reuters reported the expected appointment on October 2, 2026. If Clayton gets the job, his first task may be explaining which AI czar gets the emergency phone when the algorithm hallucinates a constitutional crisis.
