A Wayne County, Kentucky, man has been arrested after deputies say they investigated sexual messages and images sent to an underage person.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office identified the accused as Shawn Lawhorn. According to WKYT, deputies arrested him at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 24, after the minor's family reported the communications and provided a cellphone to investigators.
The investigation began with the family
Deputies said the messages began on August 15 and continued through a series of texts and photos. Investigators used the phone supplied by the family to identify a suspect, conducted an interview and obtained access to the device allegedly used to send the material.
Lawhorn faces two counts of possessing matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor between the ages of 12 and 18, along with one count of procuring or promoting the use of a minor by electronic means, according to the sheriff's account reported by WKYT.
The victim is not being named. Daily Junk Food also is withholding any detail that could help identify the young person or reproduce the alleged communications.
The phone remains central evidence
Local radio station Z93 reported that the phone is expected to be sent to Kentucky's intelligence center so investigators can seek deleted evidence. That step matters because an initial arrest does not establish the full history of a digital conversation, who created every file or whether additional accounts or devices were involved.
Kentucky law separately addresses possession or viewing of material portraying a sexual performance by a minor. The precise grading of an offense can depend on the age alleged and other facts, but prosecutors—not a headline—will have to establish every required element in court.
The sheriff's office says the investigation is continuing. No conviction has been reported, and the charges are allegations. Public reporting available Tuesday did not identify an attorney authorized to speak for Lawhorn or indicate that he had entered a plea.
The most consequential fact at this stage is also the simplest: a family saw something concerning, preserved the device and contacted authorities. What follows will depend on the digital evidence, court filings and the continuing investigation.
