UPDATE — Aug. 23, 2026: Bret Michaels has offered a more detailed explanation for the health setback that ended his 2026 comeback after a single concert.

In a Sunday statement on his official website, the 63-year-old Poison frontman said he had been working throughout the weekend with doctors and physical therapists while adjusting new medication. He said Friday's Atlanta-area heat, a same-day coast-to-coast flight and the amount of energy he poured into his first show back affected his blood sugar and blood pressure.

The update adds meaningful context to Saturday's announcement that Michaels had canceled the rest of his 2026 performances after doctors and paramedics evaluated him following his Aug. 21 concert at The Bowl at Sugar Hill in Georgia.

His calendar said comeback; his body requested an extension

Michaels had returned to the stage after emergency kidney-stone surgery and related treatment in July. He had planned to follow the Sugar Hill performance with an appearance at the Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on Saturday.

That second show never happened. His medical team said he needed a longer period of rest and recovery, particularly because summer heat and humidity can affect his blood sugar. Michaels has lived with Type 1 diabetes since childhood.

On Sunday, Michaels said he believed he could complete the scheduled shows despite what he called a recent health "domino effect." He also acknowledged that he had failed to account for the combined effects of travel, heat, exertion and medication changes, including adjustments to his insulin.

He is working with doctors and hoping for an earlier return

Michaels thanked fans, friends, family members, musicians and crews for their messages. He said he was especially disappointed to miss the Tennessee festival and hoped to return there in 2027 or 2028.

Saturday's announcement said he would take the next several months off. Sunday's update did not establish a new return date, and Michaels did not say that his doctors had cleared him to resume performing. He said he hoped the treatment plan could be figured out sooner but would continue working with his medical team.

The new account makes the cancellation less mysterious but no less abrupt: one concert, one immediate medical reassessment and a touring calendar suddenly cleared through December. Sometimes the most rock-and-roll decision available is listening when the doctors say the encore can wait.
