Republican Senator John Curtis of Utah has asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate the Trump family’s business dealings, including reports about foreign money connected to Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding. Somewhere, the phrase “if it were Hunter Biden” just pulled a hamstring from overuse.
Curtis said Congress should apply consistent standards when potential foreign influence touches a president’s family. His request focuses in part on reports that Russian boxing official Umar Kremlev paid expenses associated with Trump Jr.’s wedding and that reimbursement was planned.
The issue is not whether the reception had an open bar
Family members of presidents may run private businesses, but lawmakers have a legitimate national-security interest when foreign figures provide money, gifts or access. The relevant questions are who paid, what they expected, whether the arrangement was disclosed and whether any government decision was affected.
Curtis’s demand is politically notable because it comes from inside the Republican Party. Democrats on the committee have supported scrutiny, while several Republicans have recently broken with Trump on other policies. That does not guarantee an investigation, subpoenas or findings. It does mean the usual partisan force field has developed a visible crack.
An inquiry is not a conviction
No court has found that the reported wedding payment bought official action. Trump Jr.’s representatives had not supplied a public response in the Reuters report. A serious investigation would collect records and testimony instead of treating a headline, a family name or a party label as the verdict.
Reuters reported Curtis’s request and the allegations prompting it.
Congress spent years insisting that presidential relatives deserve microscopes, flowcharts and hearings with very dramatic binders. Applying that standard evenly should not be revolutionary. It should be the part of government that works even when the last name on the invitation changes.
