British rock band Little Angels returned with “Hero (That Was Then, This Is Now),” its first new material since 1994.
Three decades of silence just ended
British rock band Little Angels has released “Hero (That Was Then, This Is Now),” its first new music in more than 30 years. The track leads the Big Bad & Back EP, scheduled for November 6. Their previous new material arrived in 1994, when compact discs still seemed indestructible and nobody had yet asked a refrigerator to connect to Wi-Fi.
The reunion was supposed to stay onstage
The band says recording was not part of the original comeback plan. New ideas emerged during rehearsals for reunion shows, and the musicians decided the material justified a release instead of existing as an especially productive soundcheck.
Middle age became the subject
Frontman Toby Jepson said the challenge was connecting the band’s earlier identity with the people its members are now. The song reflects on youth, experience and returning home without pretending everyone remains frozen in a 1990 publicity photograph.
A familiar producer returned
The EP was recorded at Chapel Studios and mixed by Mike Fraser, known for work with AC/DC, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith. Fraser also worked on Little Angels’ 1994 single “Ten Miles High,” giving the new project a direct production link to the band’s earlier era.
The road test begins in November
A UK and Ireland tour starts November 9 in Dublin and runs through two London dates at the end of the month. New music after a long reunion gap can be risky, but making it is a healthier sign than spending the entire comeback pointing at an old logo while selling another commemorative laminate.
