Pet Shop Boys’ revised Alan Turing work A Man from the Future receives two complete BBC radio broadcasts today before its album release.

The future airs tonight

Pet Shop Boys will premiere the complete new recording of A Man from the Future on BBC Radio 6 Music today, October 4, during Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone. BBC Radio 3 will broadcast it again later in the evening. The world premiere arrives five days before the album’s October 9 release.

Alan Turing is the subject

The work explores the life and legacy of mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing, whose wartime work helped defeat Nazi Germany and whose persecution for being gay became a symbol of state cruelty. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe collaborated with Turing biographer Andrew Hodges, combining electronic music, narration and orchestral writing.

This is not a standard pop album

Juliet Stevenson provides spoken narration, Sven Helbig created orchestrations and Manchester Camerata performs the score. The 2026 version reworks a piece originally presented at the BBC Proms in 2014. It sits somewhere between concert work, biography and electronic elegy, which is admittedly a crowded place to park a keytar.

The format fits the story

Pet Shop Boys have always paired cool surfaces with complicated feeling. Turing’s story—intellectual triumph, secrecy, persecution and posthumous recognition—gives that tension historical weight. The music can celebrate his mind without pretending the injustice was repaired simply because later generations apologized.

Radio gets an event again

A full-length global broadcast asks listeners to hear the work in sequence rather than sample one track between notifications. For Gen X listeners raised when a radio premiere could rearrange an evening, that ritual feels almost radical. The future, apparently, requires everyone to stop scrolling for an hour.
