Airport security has seen shampoo bottles that are too large, suspicious sandwiches and travelers who somehow forget they have a loaded handgun in their carry-on.

But 200 lizards stuffed into socks? That is a new level of packing badly.

A man was reportedly arrested at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after customs officials discovered approximately 200 live lizards concealed inside 22 pairs of socks in his luggage.

There are several obvious questions here. Why lizards? Why socks? And how did anyone look at this plan and decide that 22 suspiciously energetic pairs of hosiery would glide unnoticed through an international airport?

The reptiles were reportedly wrapped and packed into the socks for transportation. Authorities intercepted the bizarre cargo before the traveler could continue with his alleged reptile relocation program.

Wildlife trafficking is a serious international problem. Exotic animals can command large prices, which encourages smugglers to transport them in cramped and dangerous conditions. It also threatens wild populations and risks introducing animals or diseases into places where they do not belong.

That serious reality does not make the luggage arrangement any less astonishing. Most people struggle to fit four shirts and an emergency pair of shoes into a suitcase. This man allegedly found room for an entire tiny Jurassic Park.
