A coastal Malibu mansion reportedly owned by Nicolas Cage now has the sort of driveway problem normally reserved for disaster movies. The driveway collapsed Tuesday morning, opening a giant sinkhole and triggering a gas leak that emergency crews brought under control.

The Pacific wanted the driveway back

The property sits between the Pacific Ocean and Pacific Coast Highway. Coastal flooding, heavy rain and dangerous waves connected to the remnants of Hurricane Marie battered the area over the Labor Day weekend. Malibu temporarily restricted access to five homes as officials evaluated erosion and structural danger.

SoCalGas shut off service along an 85-foot section of the street as a precaution. Local reporting placed the expanding hole at roughly 25 feet deep and approximately 30 by 60 feet across by Tuesday evening, with dozens of nearby homes facing evacuation or access restrictions.

Only Nicolas Cage could get this headline

No injuries were reported in the initial accounts, and Cage’s representatives did not immediately comment. Property records cited by news organizations identify him as the owner of the damaged home.

There is nothing funny about families being displaced or emergency access being threatened. But the casting department of reality remains almost offensively on-brand. Of every celebrity home in Malibu, the universe selected Nicolas Cage for the scene where the earth opens beside a multimillion-dollar mansion.

Officials warned that additional tides and rain could worsen conditions. The important story now is public safety, gas service and whether residents can safely reach their homes—not whether anyone finds a treasure map at the bottom.
