An elderly Syrian man has broken through a wall in his Homs home and recovered hundreds of books he concealed there 15 years ago. It is the rare home-renovation story in which “we found something behind the drywall” ends with literature instead of wiring that violates six building codes.
The man sealed the collection away as Syria descended into civil war. The hidden room protected the books through years of fighting, displacement and destruction in a city that became one of the conflict’s earliest and hardest-hit battlegrounds.
A wall became an improvised archive
Books are physically fragile. Fire, water, shelling, humidity and simple abandonment can erase a private collection quickly. Hiding the volumes did not guarantee their survival, but it created a barrier between them and a war that transformed homes into military positions and neighborhoods into rubble.
Video from the discovery shows the owner opening the wall and reaching the shelves beyond it. Sky News reported that hundreds of books remained inside.
The discovery is small compared with the war—and still important
A personal library does not carry the scale of a national archive, but it holds a person’s intellectual history: what he studied, loved, questioned and expected to revisit. Preserving that material is one way of refusing the idea that violence gets to decide what remains.
Homs endured siege, bombardment and major population loss during the conflict. The recovery of the books does not undo any of it. It does show how people plan for a future even when the present gives them little reason to trust one.
Sky News published video of the library’s recovery on September 19, 2026.
For 15 years, the wall looked like part of an ordinary house. Behind it sat evidence that someone believed there would eventually be a day safe enough to open it again. That day arrived with a hammer, a cloud of dust and several hundred quiet survivors.
Facts first. Side-eye included.
