Starbucks is giving the collectible bear cup a mystery-box sequel. Its October 26 announcement sets a November 10 U.S. launch for surprise-box Glass Bearista Cold Cups. The original green-hatted version is due back at select coffeehouses December 1. Both are limited-availability releases, according to the company.

Those are future dates. This is not a report that the new boxes are on shelves today, and the announcement does not guarantee stock at a particular store.

Two dates, two different propositions

The distinction is useful if you are following the release: a mystery assortment and a named returning design offer different buying experiences. The first asks you to accept uncertainty about the item inside. The second lets you decide whether you want the familiar version before seeking it out.

We have not bought or tested either release. The photographed box is a company-supplied press image, not evidence that we received a sample or visited a store. No price, resale value or claim about demand is being inferred from the packaging.

Analysis: apparently the cup needed a plot twist

There was a time when buying a drinking vessel involved looking at a drinking vessel and deciding whether you liked it. Now the packaging can offer a reveal, a collection and the vague feeling that opening it ought to have its own season finale.

That does not make collecting silly by definition. People enjoy objects for reasons beyond utility. A pleasing design can be worth owning simply because it makes somebody happy. Gen X has no standing to prosecute this case while our old band shirts remain under museum-level protection.

The interesting part is what the mystery adds. You are not only choosing a cup; you are choosing the experience of finding out which cup you obtained. Enjoying that experience is a preference. Treating uncertainty as proof of value would be a different claim, and this announcement supplies no basis for it.

Keep the receipt attached to the excitement

For now, the useful news is the schedule and the distinction between the releases. The rest should wait for information rather than being filled with imagined queues, sellouts, angry customers or resale prices.

If the eventual design delights you, enjoy it. If a mystery box sounds like extra administration between you and a cold drink, you can continue using a perfectly ordinary cup. It will perform the shocking technological feat of containing liquid without requiring a reveal video.
